Christmas in Michigan has taken on a new look. We’ve grown used to not having snow for the holiday, but this year brought something different. Instead of snow, a dense fog rolled in on Christmas Eve, changing the way I saw the world and giving me new chances to explore light and shadow.


A Foggy Trail Adventure


I started my journey at my favorite hiking trails. The thick fog covered the distant trees, turning familiar sights into ghostly shapes and making the world feel mysterious. Every step felt like I was walking into a storybook.


I took some amazing photos in the fog. The mist-covered nature gave my pictures a haunting beauty, with bare trees looming in the distance, their shapes both eerie and beautiful against the foggy backdrop. The black and white tones let me play with contrast, bringing out the dream-like quality of my surroundings.

Rochester Hills Illuminates the Night


As the day ended, I went to Rochester Hills, where the town's downtown was aglow with festive lights. The lights sparkled through the lingering fog, reflecting off the mist in a dazzling show. The mix of Christmas lights and fog created a stunning tapestry across the city.


In the back areas of Rochester Hills, I found scenes that were hauntingly beautiful in their simplicity. The fog softened the edges of buildings, turning alleys and structures into vague shapes that hinted at their true form. Light and shadow danced across the monochrome backdrop, creating an almost cinematic feel in each shot.


A New Way to See the Season


Choosing to shoot in black and white was a decision that really paid off. The muted tones enhanced the fog's mystery, letting me explore contrast in a subtle and striking way. Light from street lamps and Christmas lights cast dramatic shadows, deepening each scene and adding to the mood.


This foggy Christmas Eve reshaped my view of the season, showing me that beauty can appear in unexpected ways. While Michigan's Christmases may not always bring snow, they offer chances for unique and inspiring visuals. This year's fog added a new layer to my journey, and I hope my photos capture the charm of this different kind of Christmas.
