The Journey So Far
So far since really hammering my own photography again last year, I have become crazed to keep creating. I started developing my own film, produced and published my first photobook, did the thing I said I would never do which is work with families, and now decided I will publish a magazine. I am an ambitious person but I have never kept myself in a lane or stuck to one thing. Now I just want to do all the things, I am being pulled in so many directions and it feels great.
If you have known me for a while welcome back, we have a new page, new mission, new energy. I am glad to see you back here and I hope you are as excited for what the future holds as I am. If you are new here welcome to the chaos. I love visual media, especially photography, and we like to do all things in visual media. Film, photographs, and print media. I am a video editor in my day job and spend way more of my time doing fine art photography than other types. My love of analog means that I shouldn't be surprised that I want to do the seemingly impossible task of publishing my own magazine in this digital age. Alas, I do, and not only is this something I want to do, but for whatever reason in my head I have decided that even if it bleeds money I am going to do this.
What Are You Talking About?
Calm down I am getting there. I have been sitting on the idea of starting my own magazine for quite a while and I was looking for some magazines to add to my bookshelf since Behind the Shutter, one of my favorites, is no longer even releasing issues digitally. It was here that I saw a niche that I might be able to fill, or well create since I really am not sure how many people are even interested in a magazine focusing on monochromatic art, design, and photography. So I started messing around and came up with the idea for DEsaturated a magazine about black and white media. I personally love working in black and white far more than color, and I know there are other people that do too. I also haven't really found a lot of local mags celebrating Detroit photographers, artists, or designers.
So armed with all of that information and the fact that I want to produce some sort of print media if only just to say I did it and add it to my portfolio to help my career goals. I decided to lean into this and just do it. If you like black-and-white photography, monochrome art, and pretty much any medium that works in single color palettes you might enjoy this magazine. I welcome any support anyone wants to offer, as well as willing to collaborate with people so just reach out and connect. Let's create content in motion together.

Desaturated is dedicated to the celebration and exploration of black-and-white photography and monochromatic art forms. Our mission is to inspire and educate photographers, artists, and enthusiasts who appreciate the depth, emotion, and timeless beauty that can be found in monochrome. We aim to achieve this by showcasing exceptional works of art, insightful artist interviews, enlightening technical tutorials, in-depth equipment reviews, and compelling historical essays, all dedicated to the rich tradition and contemporary practice of black-and-white imagery. Desaturated seeks to foster a community that values the artistry and nuance of monochromatic expression, distinguishing itself as the leading platform for this unique aesthetic perspective.
Want to be involved?
This is first and foremost a passion project right now. I plan to do this strictly to challenge myself and prove that I can manage a project like this to add experience to my portfolio since my career goal is to become an art director leveraging my vast array of skills. In short, there won't be any monetary gain in helping me with this endeavor. HOWEVER, If you would like to still be involved for the same reasons I want to publish this I welcome you. If you would like to submit photos, or artwork to be featured, write an article for the magazine, or do designs you can submit them to desaturated@citywavemedia.com, and along with your content please leave your full name and title you would like to have included in the magazine.
Not entirely sure how this project will live digitally as of yet. My initial thought is to have articles posted on this blog. So please let me know if you are also comfortable with being featured here or if you would like to only be featured in print.
